The Idea

Imagine a room which is sounding like an "a" or a "z". Now imagine the a or z room has an accent like french or russian. Wouldn't it be cool to play drums inside that room? What about changing between several "alphabet" rooms while playing, so you can let your drums talk? And how about separate rooms for male and female voices? Cool right? Well, we thought so, too! Therefore we created such rooms, recorded and mapped them, so you can play the whole alphabet with each drum. Let us introduce you to Speeched Drums!

How we did it

It all started with a recording booth, inhabited by a microphone to record native speakers of several languages and accents. We collected male and female voices, cut them and dragged the results in our DAW. Here the real work started! We set up several drumcomputers and and fet them into convolution reverbs, one for each letter of the particular alphabet. Then each character got shaped to make sure the individual notes fit to each other. After the processing the volume envelopes were edited with our modular synthesizer to make them more punchy. Sometimes several drumcomputers got layered, with hard EQing and other processing. We used 16 drums per kit, each recorded with 35 different convolution reverbs. Therefore one multi sampleset contains 608 samples.

How to play it

The mapping is quite basic, except for the velocity. It's data is not meant to affect the volume, but the character spoken by the drums! This way you can easily create chains of characters or, like we call it, words. Here's a list of the velocity numbers and characters:

  • 0 - 15 plays pure Drum
  • 16 - 18 plays 0
  • 19 - 21 plays 1
  • 22 - 24 plays 2
  • 25 - 27 plays 3
  • 28 - 30 plays 4
  • 31 - 33 plays 5
  • 34 - 36 plays 6
  • 37 - 39 plays 7
  • 40 - 42 plays 8
